Seven of Wands upright

Higher ground, six staves reaching up from below, and one person holding the position anyway. Outnumbered, still standing. Something you've built is being challenged right now, and this card's advice is simple: don't back down just because it's contested. You have more ground than it feels like from up here; the high position is still yours. This is a moment for standing firm, not for picking a new fight.

You're defending something, and you're going to have to keep defending it for a while yet. The position is defensible, which is the good news, but nobody is coming to relieve you of it. Conviction is doing more work here than resources are, and that's enough for now. Decide consciously that this is worth the energy, and then stop relitigating it weekly.

Seven of Wands reversed

The position has finally been given up. Worn down by defending it, or the realisation that it wasn't worth the fight. It can mean feeling overwhelmed by opposition, unsure if there's any ground left to hold. Or it's overcorrection: fighting battles that were never actually being picked with you. Worth checking whether this is a hill worth holding, or one you've just got used to defending.

The defending has become more expensive than whatever's being defended. This is the point where holding a position out of stubbornness starts to look identical to holding it out of principle, from the inside. It can also just be exhaustion: the fight was legitimate and you're out of energy for it. Stepping back here isn't losing. Sometimes it's just accurate.
