Nine of Wands upright

Bandaged, tired, still standing, still holding the staff. This is resilience that has earned every bit of its exhaustion. You've been through enough rounds of this to be cautious, and that caution is reasonable, not weakness. One more push is likely between you and the finish, even though it doesn't feel that way from here. Rest if you can. Don't put the staff down just yet.

You're tired, and you're still standing, and both of those things are true at once. This card shows up near the end of something difficult rather than in the middle of it. The last stretch, not the whole race. The wariness you've developed is earned, but it's starting to cost you as much as it protects. You have more left than you think. This is closer to done than it feels.

Nine of Wands reversed

A defence held up too long. Exhaustion turning into rigidity, guarding against threats that already passed. It can mean burnout that's finally caught up with you, or wariness built from real past battles that isn't reading the present accurately anymore. Or it's the opposite: giving up right before the actual finish line, when the last push was closer than it looked. Worth checking whether you're still fighting the last war instead of the one in front of you.

The guard has been up so long it's become the default, regardless of whether there's still anything to guard against. Vigilance that outlives its threat turns into a kind of low-grade suspicion that's genuinely exhausting to maintain. Alternatively, this is simple depletion. Nothing left to defend with, and pretending otherwise. Rest is not the same as surrender, whatever the last year has taught you.
