Death upright
Death is the least literal card in the deck and also the most honest. Something in your life has already ended, whether or not you've said goodbye to it. This isn't destruction for its own sake; it's the clearing that has to happen before anything new gets room to grow. Whatever needs to end will hurt less the sooner you stop trying to keep it on life support. The sun is already rising behind this card. The ending and the beginning sit closer together than they look.
Death rarely means what people brace for when they see it. This is usually about something finally being allowed to end cleanly instead of dragging on. This is rarely a fast card. Whatever's ending needs to be allowed to end, not rushed past or dressed up as something smaller. What's closing isn't a punishment; it's just no longer the right shape for what you're becoming. The space this leaves behind is uncomfortable now and useful later.
Death reversed
An ending is being fought rather than accepted. Something already over, kept technically alive out of fear of the space it would leave. It can mean a transition that's dragging on far longer than it needs to, stuck in the in-between instead of finishing the crossing. Sometimes this is just fear talking: change feels like loss before it's had the chance to prove it's also a door. The longer this gets held onto, the more it costs to finally let go.
Resisting an ending that has already effectively happened. Keeping the form without the substance. This can look like a relationship, job, or identity that's technically still going but has quietly stopped being true. Delaying the goodbye doesn't undo it; it just stretches out the part that hurts. Letting go here isn't giving up. It's catching up to something that already happened.
How this card is read
The passages above show this card on its own. In a reading, its meaning is composed again around its position and neighboring cards, so the same symbol can speak differently each time.
